Christmas church services cancelled

The church’s Covid restrictions have been revised in the wake of yesterday’s announcement of the extended Covid restrictions.

With no more than 100 people allowed to gather indoors at a time with high infection rates, bishop Jógvan Fríðriksson yesterday decided to call off all regular Christmas church services as a safety precaution.

The bishop said he is saddened by this situation, and he hopes to be able to reopen the churches as soon as possible.

Outdoor services

There will, however, be some outdoor Christmas services. Christmas prayers will be held in Klaksvík city centre on Christmas Eve at 4pm, and trubodin.fo will also be streaming Christmas prayers on 24 and 25 December at 3pm. These services will be conducted in Faroese.

“The extended restrictions came at short notice, so the possibility of setting up livestreaming services at this time is quite limited,” the bishop said yesterday.

He added that with more than 60 churches in the country, it is not unlikely that there will be some further outdoor events arranged locally around the country.

“But there may not be any need for reinventing the wheel just because we are restricted by the corona situation. We can instead regard this as a good opportunity to enjoy some quiet moments of reflection in our homes.”
