Refugee centre opens in Tórshavn

The folk high school is expected to welcome the first Ukrainian refugees tomorrow.
Refugees will be transported from the airport to the school, where they will be offered stay while their application for a residence permit is being processed.
This process is expected to take between one and two weeks.
“Those who have already been offered homestay with a local family will probably not stay here long and will instead go directly to their private accommodation,” says Bárður Atlason Ísheim, who heads daily operations for Red Cross Faroe Islands.

In addition to accommodation, the school will offer various courses for children and adults, a creative workshop and other activities.
Ísheim says that this is a temporary solution put in place while other arrangements are made by the Immigration Office and Red Cross, who coordinate the nationwide refugee efforts.
Føroya Fólkaháskúli is a residential school for adults, based on a Scandinavian creative education concept. The school, which features 34 bedrooms, a large kitchen/dining room and a sports hall, is located in a green environment in Tórshavn’s city centre.
