Immigrants from outside the Nordic region applying for a permanent residence permit will need to have some degree of Faroese language proficiency.

This requirement has been recommended by Faroese politicians throughout the process of formulating the upcoming integration bill.

And now, integration minister Magnus Rasmussen has confirmed that an as yet unspecified level of Faroese language proficiency will be included in the bill which he aims to submit to Parliament sometime this autumn.

No such requirements will be made for temporary workers from abroad.

“When the Aliens Act was amended in 2018, there was broad agreement in Parliament that a language requirement should be included in the Integration Act,” says the minister.

“Familiarity with the Faroese language and culture is essential for successful integration and also important for immigrants who want to make good use of their skills in the Faroe Islands.”
