Language café to boost integration

Today sees the launch of the Málkafé, an informal drop-in language café run by Red Cross volunteers, who will speak Faroese with anyone who wants to practise their Faroese conversational skills.
“Speaking the language is the key to integrating into any society,” says David Im, integration coordinator at the Immigration Office.
“A language café can create relations between immigrants and ethnic Faroese people, and that is important because immigration is a two-way process.”

The language café in Tórshavn will be a weekly event, held on Thursdays 5pm-7pm on the third floor of the Býarbókasavnið library.
Klaksvík’s language café will take place on the last Thursday of every month between 5pm and 7pm at Klaksvík’s library.
“Grammar is of course important, but the best way to learn a language is to practise speaking it without worrying so much about being grammatically correct,” says Fía Niclasen, of Red Cross Faroe Islands.
No registration is required, you can come and go as you please and the volunteers will be happy to keep your children company while you practise your Faroese skills.
