Every year, thousands of Christmas presents are sent from the Faroes to children in distress across the world.

This is done as part of the international ‘Operation Christmas Child’ initiative.

The Faroes began contributing to this initiative in 2003 when about 300 presents were sent from the Faroes.

Last year, this number surpassed 3,000. One of the contributors was 89-year-old Osla Arge Ellingsgaard from Klaksvík, who had filled five shoeboxes with handmade clothes, cuddly toys and accessories.

Osla enjoyed doing this, so much so that as early as January this year, she started preparing items for this Christmas.

Her work is done now, and she has sewn and knitted enough items to fill 43 shoeboxes which will now be shipped to children in Ukraine.

“I really enjoy making these presents. I cannot stop thinking about these poor children who do not get anything for Christmas,” she says.

“We have such great abundance here in the Faroes, so it’s only right that we give to those in need.”
