Regular inspections of work and residence permits in the Faroes have been taking place before and after the fast-track employment system was introduced in 2021.

This was the key message in integration minister Bjarni Kárason Petersen’s reply earlier this week to an enquiry in Parliament about general supervision of the fast-track programme.

The Immigration Office is authorised to arrange unannounced visits at workplaces that use the fast-track programme.

However, as reported in a recent article, the fast-track programme was introduced during the pandemic, which resulted in a shortage of resources for these so-called social dumping spot checks.

Work going on behind the scenes

Despite the lack of physical inspections of workplaces, the Immigration Office has looked into cases in which employers have failed to meet the requirements of the fast-track programme.

In addition, the Danish Agency for International Recruitment and Integration (SIRI) regularly monitors applications for work permit extensions in the Faroes.

Regarding physical inspections of workplaces using the fast-track programme, the integration minister has spoken to the relevant parties and now confirms that that the resources are in place for these workplace inspections to resume on a regular basis.

The Immigration Office is currently reviewing its information requirements for migrant workers and is considering new ways of ensuring that all migrant workers are given adequate information about their rights and obligations in the Faroese labour market.
