Earlier this week, the Salvation Army’s food bank in Tórshavn was almost empty.

“This is something I have never experienced in the 11 years I have been working here,” says Martin Kúrberg, who heads the Salvation Army homeless shelter.

Fortunately, however, thanks to private and business sponsors, the food bank has now been restocked, and the Salvation Army is again able to deliver food to those who need it the most.

This comes in the same week that BankNordik announced its plans to pay out DKK 250 million in dividends to its shareholders.

“I find it very difficult to understand how a bank can pay out such staggering amounts while families from all walks of life are struggling to pay for food,” says Kúrberg.

“A new inflation relief package is expected in about three weeks’ time. This is reassuring to know, but three weeks is a long time to wait for families that are starving.”
