A dedicated centre for domestic violence will officially open at Tórshavn’s women’s refuge on 1 July.

The physical framework is not yet fully up and running, but the centre has been offering limited service for some time.

Staff are reporting a steady increase in people – women and men – seeking help for domestic violence.

Preparations for the centre began in early 2022 when a working group was appointed.

DKK 300,000 was allocated to the centre last year, and DKK 650,000 has been earmarked in the 2023 budget proposal to cover rent and salaries.

Further expenses are expected, according to the Ministry of Social Affairs, as staff needs further training and the demand for psychological counselling is expected to rise.
