Faroese handball adventure rolls on as men's national team inches closer to first-ever EURO championships

It’s been known for some time, and yesterday it became even clearer: the Faroes have some of the best young handball players in the world.

This was evidenced by Elias Ellefsen á Skipagøtu (pictured above), Óli Mittún, Hákun West av Teigum, Pauli Jacobsen and all the other players on the Faroese men’s national team in yesterday’s EURO qualifier game against Ukraine in Tórshavn.

The 2,000 spectators appeared to be expecting a special result on the back of last month’s sensational win against Romania.

And their excitement was justified as the Faroese players established a promising advantage early on. They held on to this advantage throughout, eventually seeing off the Ukrainian side with a seven-goal lead.

Teis Horn Rasmussen played a crucial part in the Faroese defence. He also scored two goals.

Hákun West av Teigum scored six goals.

At the young age of 17, Óli Mittún has already become a household name in international handball.

Emotions were running high throughout the game.

The Ukrainian keeper did his best to defend against the Faroese heavy hitters, led by Skipagøtu, Mittún and Teigum.

There was never really any doubt about who was the better team.

Yesterday’s result will drastically improve the Faroese goal difference, which might become a crucial factor in qualifying for EURO 2024.

Leivur Mortensen played what is believed to be his best game for the national team.

The Ukrainian defence struggled to keep up with the nimble-footed Faroese players, leaving the goalkeeper under constant pressure.

Hákun West av Teigum was recently voted as the best young right-winger in the world, a title which he certainly lived up to yesterday.

Twenty-year-old playmaker and international star player Elias Ellefsen á Skipagøtu has played better matches, yet he scored 13 goals and had eight assists.

The Faroes have at least one international handball superstar. After yesterday’s game, a few more have probably been added to the list.

Yesterday’s win brings the Faroes to four points in Group 4, level with Romania but with a worse goal difference. Austria leads the group with ten points. Ukraine has two points at the bottom of the group.
