It is now three weeks since three bottlenose whales were first spotted in the Kaldbaksfjørður inlet near Tórshavn.

Many cars stop abruptly when the passengers see this rare sight, and that presents a potential traffic hazard, according to the police.

Show consideration

It is not against the law to stop at the side of the Kaldbaksvegur road. However, police advise drivers to show consideration to other road users.

“As the road has an 80 km/h speed limit, slamming the brakes on the car when seeing the whales is not responsible traffic behaviour,” says a police spokesperson.

“It would be very helpful if drivers who want to watch the whales continue to the road at the other end of the inlet before stopping because there is a lot less traffic there.”
