A new project aims to bring the Viking era to life in Skipanes, near Runavík, within the next four years.

Last week, Runavík City Council acquired all the materials and layout plans for a Viking homestead replica originally planned to be built near Kvíkvík, Streymoy.

“We all know that Eysturoy plays a central role in the early settlement of the Faroe Islands,” says Runavík mayor Torbjørn Jacobsen.

“Tróndur í Gøtu, a pioneering Viking chieftain, could not have moored his ships in the Gøtuvík bay due to the unusually strong currents there. We believe he sought calmer anchorage here in Skipanes.”

The mayor’s claim is further supported by the name of the village: Skipanes translates into ‘ship headland’ in English.

Planning work for the project will begin soon, and the mayor estimates that it will be completed in about three to four years.
