Far fewer schools and far more pupils
The number of schools has halved in the past 25 years, while the average pupil number per school has risen by a third

In 1957, there were 96 primary and lower-secondary schools (fólkaskúlar) in the country, and the average number of pupils per school was 57.

Today, there are 39 such schools, with an average pupil number of 180, reports Skúlablaðið, the Teachers’ Association’s magazine.

Some 7,020 pupils are registered in fólkaskúlin schools this school year.

An additional 167 pupils attend the country’s three independent private schools.

The Húsar-Syðradalur school in Kalsoy is the smallest school in the country, currently with only two pupils.

Tórshavn’s Skúlin á Fløtum is the largest, with 776 pupils.

The number of schools with 50 or fewer pupils is declining, dropping from 33 in 2008 to 15 today.
