The City Council last night agreed to ask the government to grant the council the authority to impose a mandatory residence requirement on properties.

A majority of the council, Fólkaflokkurin, Tjóðveldi and Framsókn, voted in favour of the proposal.

Annfinn Brekkstein (Sambandsflokkurin) and Halla Samuelsen (Javnaðarflokkinum) voted against.

Initially, the plan is to introduce mandatory residence in the á Reyni district of Tórshavn and in Nólsoy.

Tórshavn City Council also looked at introducing mandatory residence in 2014. This proposal was voted down because it was deemed at the time that municipalities are not authorised to set a requirement for mandatory residence.

But a lot has changed since then, and now the council is readdressing its mandatory residence plans.
