On 1 September, 51,060 people lived in the Faroes, which is an increase of 815 on the previous year.

The increase comes from an excess of births (257) and a net migration of 558.

The highest population growth was in Eysturoy and the capital region.

Suðuroy was the only district with a decline in the population, with 42 fewer citizens this year than the previous year. Sandoy has the same population today as a year ago.

Tórshavn saw an increase of 416 people in the period 1 September 2017-1 September 2018 – a 2.2-percent increase and more than half of the national population growth in the period.

The highest relative growth was in Eysturoy, where the growth was 2.4 percent.

Norðoyggjar had an increase of 1.5 percent, while Vágar and Streymoy (excluding the capital region) had a 1-percent population growth.

In the 2017-2018 period, the net immigration figure included 163 more men than women. As the excess of births in the period included 27 more girls than boys, and 52 more men than women died, the total population increase figure featured 84 more men than women.

Statistics Faroe Islands points out that the large increase in immigration figures in recent years should perhaps not be regarded in absolute terms, since many people have moved to the Faroes recently due to the great demand for foreign labour, especially in the construction industry.
