Two men, aged 24 and 44, were yesterday charged with attempted insurance fraud. The charges were made in connection with an incident this summer in which a car was found in the sea below the old road to Leirvík.

Police officers found the car on the bottom of the sea, some five metres away from land.

It soon became clear that no-one was in the car or in the surrounding area, and the search and rescue operation was called off after a few hours.

After extensive investigations, police have now charged a 24-year-old man with intentionally tipping the car over the edge and into the sea, and for attempted insurance fraud. The man has pleaded guilty to both charges.

Another man, aged 44, is also charged with attempted insurance fraud, but he denies the charge.
