It is unacceptable that Framsókn (the Progress Party) submits a proposal regarding a key objective of the government within a jurisdiction belonging to another minister.

This is the view of Helena Dam á Neystabø, the head of Social Democrats’ Parliamentary Party, who thinks it is worrying that an entire governmental party backs such a comprehensive proposal.

Framsókn MPs Ruth Vang and Hanna Jensen yesterday submitted a proposal to postpone the quota system for a year, and it has been described as a bomb dropped on the coalition.

Javnaðarflokkurin (the Social Democratic Party), Tjóðveldi (Republicans) and Framsókn (the Progress Party) make up the current coalition government, and Framsókn’s move has caused serious discord in the government.

“This is simply unacceptable, and I expect them to withdraw the proposal instantly,” says Neystabø.

This view is echoed by the head of Tjóveldi’s Parliamentary Party, Annita á Fríðriksmørk: “It is just not right that a single MP or a party can overrule a minister like this.”

Javnaðarflokkurin has scheduled an internal meeting on the matter later today.
