Rules on private energy production under review

SEV is reviewing its rules on how private energy producers can be hooked up to the national electricity grid.

This comes in the wake of a complaint from Ólavur Poulsen, who recently invested DKK 200,000 in a small hydro energy plant in his home village of Vatnsoyrar, Vágar, in the hope of selling his surplus energy to SEV’s national grid.

SEV turned down Poulsen’s request to sell his surplus energy to the grid, arguing that it is not in accordance with the existing rules that the public should pay for a private producer’s energy.

Hákun Djurhuus, CEO of SEV, says that energy bills from SEV cover more than just energy production. They also cover costs for administration, maintenance of the grid and other investments, and this is all paid for by consumers.

Until SEV’s review of its energy buy back system is complete and new conditions have been set, private energy producers will continue to be bound by the existing rules, which were approved in April 2018.
