Inquiry into Miðvágur shooting incident terminated

The public prosecutor in Copenhagen has shut down the enquiry into a shooting incident in Miðvágur last year.
The inquiry is being stopped because the public prosecutor has concluded that the police officer involved in the shooting incident fired his gun in self defence or to defend his police colleagues.
As Faroese police officers were actively involved in the incident, further investigations were carried out by the Danish state police to ensure fair proceedings.
The shooting incident broke out on 9 December last year after reports of a man threatening to take his own life with a shotgun. When police officers arrived at the scene, the man fired numerous shots at them. One police officer returned fire, and three of the shots hit the man.

The man was admitted to a Danish hospital for treatment of his injuries and was later charged with attempted murder of a police officer on patrol as well as intending to cause grievous bodily harm to the officer.
As the police officer was wearing a helmet, he sustained only minor injuries from the incident.
The defendant, who remains in custody in Denmark, denies all charges against him, claiming to have no recollection of the incident.
