Anxious times on rat-free island
Residents in Nólsoy have been busy over the past couple of days placing rat traps across the village.
This comes after passengers saw a rat-like creature on the ferry from Tórshavn to Nólsoy on Friday evening.
Rats have so far never been spotted on the island, and residents are keen to maintain their rat-free status.
”This is a very serious matter because rats can damage crops and stored foodstuffs, and they also carry diseases,” says Rannvá Arge, of Tórshavn City Council’s environmental department.
Most likely a large mouse
Ferry passengers said the creature was more likely to have been a mouse.
“It was said to be a large mouse, so it is better to be safe than sorry, and we are now setting up traps and other rodent extermination devices in the village,” says Arge.
A ferry passenger managed to catch the creature and threw it overboard before the ferry arrived in Nólsoy.
“We are very grateful that ferry passengers take this matter seriously, and we call on everyone visiting rat-free islands to stay alert.”
