Shortage of housing for refugees

It has so far been relatively easy for Ukrainian refugees to find accommodation in the Faroes.

However, as the number of refugees continues to rise, it is becoming increasingly difficult to find homes for everyone.

“It has gone well up to now, especially considering that we don’t have social housing in the Faroes. We have been relying on private accommodation, which has gone fairly well,” says Durita Kastalag, integration consultant at the Immigration Office.

Short-term rental contracts

“But some of these flats and houses were only made available for six months during the tourist off-season, which means we now need to look for new homes as some of them will be used for tourists from April onwards.”

About 28 refugees will be required to vacate their current lodgings between 31 March until 30 June.

Twelve refugees are currently staying at a refugee centre while they are waiting to be allocated a place to live. Some of these people have not yet been issued a residence permit.
