Since the reopening measures were introduced, many bars, restaurants and nightclubs have stayed open beyond the recommended 10pm closing time.

Up to now, police have not had the authority to step in when this closing time has been violated.

But this is set to change now after Prime Minister Bárður á Steig Nielsen submitted a bill to Parliament which grants police the power to enforce compliance with the 10pm closing times.

The bill also seeks to allow authorities to set and enforce compliance with a maximum number of people allowed in these establishments.

“It is well documented that there is an increased risk of COVID-19 infection in the nightlife where alcohol is involved, so this is a necessary step,” said Nielsen, adding that this is a temporary measure.
