There is insufficient data regarding food waste to support the need for a food bank at this time.

So say the government members of the parliamentary industry committee, who advise Parliament to reject a proposal from Javnaðarflokkurin (Social Democratic Party) to set up a food bank in the Faroes.

Tórshavn-based incinerator Brennistøðin á Hjalla burns an average of about 5,000 tonnes of household waste every year, but it is unclear how much of this is food waste.

The nearest estimate is based on tests in Norway, which indicate that 46 percent of all household waste is food waste.

The government is preparing new regulations regarding waste, including provisions on food waste.
