It has been clear for some time that many people develop long-term effects, also known as long Covid, after being infected with the coronavirus.

This is backed up in a new Faroese survey of 170 people who tested Covid positive 23 months ago.

More than one-third of the respondents said they experienced long Covid symptoms.

“Of those who reported long Covid, 22 percent reported experiencing fatigue, 15 percent said they had problems with memory. Some have problems with concentration, and 9 percent have reduced taste and smell,” says public health professor Pál Weihe.

A new study from King’s College, London, has identified three main types of long Covid, each with its own set of symptoms.

Weihe says that Faroese researchers are currently looking at more recent cases with the omicron variant, and the long-term effects of this variant will become clearer soon.

“It is too early for us to reach the same conclusions as the British study, but we are developing a long-term picture for the omicron variant at the moment.”
