Parents sound the alarm over daycare problems

The current situation in Tórshavn’s daycare system is unacceptable and potentially dangerous.
So says the parents’ committee of the Maritugøta daycare centre in Hoyvík, which last week invited parents’ committees from all daycare centre to a meeting aimed at improving the way the committees work together.
“Daycare staff don’t stay for long, they are too young and they are given far too much responsibility,” said Høgni Midjord í Stovuni and Barbara Djurhuus, members of the Maritugøta parents’ committee.

“Some daycare centres have no qualified pedagogue, leaving young assistants in charge of everything.”
They were keen to point out that not all daycare centres in the capital region experience this problem and that representatives from all centres were invited to the meeting.
“We are happy that so many attended. This problem could easily spread to other daycare centres, even those that are not currently experiencing any problems,” the two parents said.
“The shortage of qualified daycare staff is not new, and it remains unclear how the problem can be solved. But uniting the parents’ committees is a good start.”
