No need for old cinema law
Cinema licences are unnecessary bureaucratic hurdles, says culture ministry

The cinema law from 1984 no longer serves its purpose, says the Ministry of Social Affairs and Culture, which wants it scrapped.

According to the law, running a cinema or organising public film screenings requires a special licence from the culture minister.

This approval process, the ministry argues, is an unnecessary bureaucratic hurdle and is not in line with the government’s policy of less government intrusion into cultural matters.

Another reason for scrapping the law, according to the ministry, is that people who organise public film screenings rarely apply for permits, leaving officials having to proactively seek out such events.

For these reasons and others, the cinema law is being administered arbitrarily and no longer serves its purpose, argues the ministry.
