Work is well underway to implement a so-called smiley scheme for stores and restaurants.

A smiley scheme is a simple and effective way for consumers to make informed choices about where to eat.

It also serves as a valuable tool for restaurants as it incentivises them to maintain high food safety standards.

“Our preparations are well underway,” says Malan N. Mikkelsen, the head of the HFS food department, which will administer the upcoming smiley system.

“It’s too early to say when we will introduce the system, but once we do, the public will be given much better transparency about food safety.”

Essentially, such a system works by food safety inspectors assessing whether stores and restaurants comply with food safety regulations such as food handling, temperature control, cleaning and sanitation.

The results of the inspection are then assigned a smiley face rating:

Happy face: All good

Neutral face: Room for improvement

Sad face: Big problems.

These ratings will be displayed on a sticker at the entrance to the store or restaurant.
