Tórshavn-based IT company Elektron will be in charge of the daily running of the upcoming digital identity.

The digital identity will be used to log into all public-sector systems, and eventually it will replace the Danish NemID as a personal banking login.

Ulla Joensen, Elektron’s CEO, says her company’s role will involve the day-to-day running of the system, which IT firm Klintra and Føroya Tele are currently developing.

Nicolai Mohr Balle, project manager of Talgildu Føroyar (the National Digitalisation Programme of the Faroe Islands), says that the digital identity will only work with public-sector services initially, but that private service providers will eventually become part of the system, too.

All public institutions will be required to use the digital identity, which means that all citizens will need it to log into systems such as Taks.

The digital identity is expected to be ready to use this time next year, according to Balle.
