Trade unions calling for shorter work week
Leading trade unions have set out their wishes to shorten the work week ahead of this month’s general election

Two of the country’s largest trade unions are pushing for a shorter work week. The Pedagogue Union is calling on politicians to cut five hours off the current 40-hour work week.

Starvsmannafelagið (the Salaried Staff Union) also wants a shorter work week and is recommending 37 hours per week for its members.

It appears likely that this topic will be an important factor in the upcoming trade union talks with the government. The contract between Starvsmannafelagið and the Ministry of Finance expires on 1 October.
