Big knockout on home soil

The Faroese national football team was humiliated in its third Nations League match last night.
Ahead of the game, players and coach were hopeful of a good result. But the visitors showed no respect and left with three points and three goals in the bag.
Faroese team captain Atli Gregersen said after the game that it did not feel like a crushing defeat because he felt the team created the possibilities it set out to create.
“We just couldn’t get the ball in, and our defence was too inconsistent,” he said. “But I have a better feeling now than after the Kosovo game, even though this defeat was bigger.
Assistant coach Jóannes Jakobsen also had mixed feelings after the match.
“I am not going to make any excuses, but this did not feel like a 3-0 defeat. Still, we were thrashed and that’s something we have to accept.”
Coach Lars Olsen admitted that his team made many silly mistakes and that things are not looking very promising at the moment.
“The upcoming game against Kosovo on Sunday will also be difficult because I think Kosovo is a stronger side than Azerbaijan. But we will do everything in our power to win that one, and then we will see where that will take us.”
The Faroese team had numerous attempts at goal and also had more possession, but no goals came out of it.
The visitors, on the other hand, made the best of their chances. Richard Almeida scored the first and third goals, while Dimitri Nazarov got the second one. The third goal was a penalty.
The Faroe Islands now sit third in group D3 of the UEFA Nations League.
