For reasons best left unexplored here, figures from the National Hospital’s maternity ward show a significant rise in the number of pregnant women expected to give birth around Christmas time.

“Based on the birth rate figures for the past five years, we’re seeing an unusually high number of women expecting babies in December and January,” says Beinta Dahl-Olsen, the acting head of the midwife team at the National Hospital’s maternity ward.

The figures show that 65 women are expecting to give birth in December, which is an increase of 18 on December last year. And another 65 are due in January 2021, an increase of six on January 2020.
