Creative recycling workshop opens in Hoyvík

Waste minimisation and recycling interest group Hugla has for some time been collecting recyclable items for a special purpose.
Hoping to affect people’s attitudes to the buy-and-discard culture, Hugla has now opened the country’s first creative recycling workshop, also known as a repair café, in Hoyvík.
“We have opened an 80-square-metre premises where people can meet to repair various used items that we have collected from households and businesses,” says Birita Arge, chairwoman of Hugla.
The recyclable items include clothes, bicycles, household appliances and electrical/mechanical devices.

“We have a vast array of items. The idea is that people can come in and apply their creative skills to either repair the items or create something new out of the old ones.”
Hugla’s objective is to provide a place where people can socialise while at the same time working toward reducing waste and maintaining repair skills.
“We hope to inspire people to think of new solutions rather than just throwing away used items.”
The new repair café is located at Karlamagnusarbreyt 22 in Hoyvík. For more information, email huglaendurskapan@gmail.com.
