One of the longest snow periods in living memory

It’s snowy. It’s been snowy for a while now, and it will continue to be snowy for a while longer.
“The snowy weather will continue today and tomorrow. Weather conditions will change slightly on Wednesday, but my guess is that the snow will be with us for the rest of the week,” says Viðareiði-based meteorologist Hanus Kjølbro.
“There have been long snow cover periods in the past, but I cannot remember a longer one than what we’re seeing now.”

Some parts of the country have seen more snow than others. This, he explains, depends to a large extent on the size, shape and position of the mountains in relation to the wind direction.
The coldest temperature measured this year was minus 3 degrees. However, the wind chill – the so-called ‘feels-like temperature’ – has come as far down as minus 9 degrees some nights.
