Foreign talent boosts AB’s push for the top
Argir-based football club AB has a new strategy for improving its results in the Faroese top league.
The club has added eleven players representing five nationalities to its squad.
“We used to fill our squad with Faroese players who turned out to lack the ambition to reach the top level of Faroese football,” says head coach Sámal Erik Hentze.
“We have adopted a new approach, and we are now looking beyond the Faroes to strengthen our team with the right blend of talent and ambition.”
Boosted by diversity
He adds that the diversity of talent coming from abroad is already bringing out the very best across the entire squad.
Onni Tiihonen, from Finland, is one of the club’s new signings. Having played for various clubs in Helsinki, he relished at the chance of joining the Faroese club when he was called up.
“I hope I will develop as a player here with AB over the coming years,” says the 21-year-old midfielder. ”My big dream is to play in the Champions League.”

This is slightly more ambitious than the AB management’s medium-term goal.
“Our initial goal is to avoid relegation from the top league this season,” says coach Hentze.
“We aim to step up a few places in the championship table over the next couple of seasons, and perhaps then we can realistically start aiming for the top.”
