The 50 electric rental scooters that were confiscated by police last summer have been handed back to their owner

We may well be seeing electric scooters on the streets of Tórshavn next week.

Last year, Icelandic entrepreneur Ebbi Asgeirsson imported 50 scooters from Iceland with the intention of starting up a rental programme in Tórshavn under the brand name ‘Hopp’ (Jump).

But only hours after the scooters hit the streets of the capital, they were confiscated by police due to complications related to vehicle classification.

Arguing that the scooters pose a significant traffic risk, police and the Road Safety Council took the matter to the Court of the Faroe Islands, which ruled in favour of the complainants.

Scooters given green light

Asgeirsson appealed the decision to the High Court, which upheld his contention.

All 50 scooters have now been returned to their owner.

“This is fantastic – it feels like a massive burden has been lifted off my shoulders,” he says.

“If no further surprises come up, we should be seeing the scooters on the streets of Tórshavn early next week.”
