Improved IT security in schools

Pupils and teachers at the schools in Sandur and Skopun are enjoying their summer holidays, yet there is plenty of activity at these schools.
The final preparations are being made to fulfil a set of stringent criteria for data security and protection outlined in the new ‘Skúlanet’ unified IT strategy.
Skulin.fo describes Skúlanet as follows:
IT management across educational sectors
“The Directorate of Education, together with schools’ managements, have emphasized the need for an improved IT administration system for the educational sector. The result of such consensus is the unified IT strategy, which spans all educational sectors.
“The primary objectives of the unified IT strategy are the development of a student management system and an IT support organisation. Moreover, two supporting projects are designed to solidify the implementation of the strategic goals, that is, a joint leadership and organisational development course and a joint IT didactic capabilities development concept.”

IT security criteria for students and school staff are on a steady increase as IT is becoming an increasingly integral part of education.
As these criteria can be a challenge for each individual educational institution to fulfil, the plan is to centralise this task through the Skúlanet system to allow schools to focus more on teaching.
Skálavík, Sørvágur and Sjóvar municipalities have also signed up to the Skúlanet system, as has Tórshavn’s Vinnuháskúlin (the Centre of Maritime Studies and Engineering).
Other local councils have expressed an interest in joining.
