As we reported yesterday, Google does not accept advertising material written in Faroese.

This puts Faroese businesses at a big disadvantage in their competition against companies from abroad. But we should not let this discourage us, says trade minister Høgni Hoydal.

“We will not give up. Now we know where we stand, and we will double down on this,” he says.

The government is in daily talks with the relevant parties, he adds, and a Faroese delegation recently travelled to the US to ask for help from the authorities there to get Google to recognise the Faroese language.

“Google is based in the US, but it is a global business. By ignoring our language, Google demonstrates a lack of respect for cultural diversity, and that goes right against many of Google’s core values,” says the minister.

“This is clearly an important matter for our country, our language and our culture, and I will do everything in my power to find a solution.”
