Oil tanker hits fish farming cages in Vágur

On its approach to the Port of Vágur yesterday morning, oil tanker Bothnia sailed right through Bakkafrost’s fish farm.

At a speed of 10.5 knots, the tanker made contact with and caused damage to a number of the farming cages. No fish were in the cages at the time.

Police are investigating the incident and have confirmed that the captain was not under the influence of alcohol or any other illegal substances.

Oil, gas and chemical tankers are required by law to have a licensed pilot on board when docking in Faroese harbours, but Bothnia had no pilot.

Millions in compensation

Bakkafrost CEO Regin Jacobsen says the company’s cages are clearly marked in the charts and are fitted with radar reflectors and flashers.

The extent of the damage has not yet been determined, but Jacobsen says his company will file a compensation claim against Bothnia’s shipping company.

The claim will be worth millions of kroner, says Jacobsen. Had there been fish in the cages at the time of contact, the claim would have been significantly higher.

It is unclear whether a maritime enquiry will be launched.
