Although only three specific restrictions remain – no music festivals, early closing times for bars and restaurants and no tourists – many are calling for further reopening measures.

Chief medical officer Lars Fodgaard Møller, on the other hand, believes that the Faroes are currently the most open society in the world in terms of lockdown measures.

“Having eliminated the virus from our society, it makes good sense to guard our borders from incoming travellers,” he says.

“Music festivals and late-night activities in bars pose a great risk of infection due to the close proximity and the consumption of alcohol, so these restrictions also make good sense at the moment.”

Møller adds that the Faroese public is well equipped to deal with a possible second wave of infection.

“When the coronavirus came to our part of the world, we were not well prepared and were not very good at practising social distancing. But we have now proved that we are good at following public health guidelines, so we are well-prepared should a second wave emerge.”
