Three thousand fewer medical appointments

Three thousand fewer medical appointments
The Covid pandemic has pushed the treatment of other diseases and ailments to the back of the queue, but hospitals are now starting to catch up

The number of outpatient appointments and surgeries is down by about 3,000 so far this year compared to the same period last year.

This figure forms part of a reply from health minister Kaj Leo Holm Johannesen to an enquiry from MP Sirið Stenberg.

Orthopaedic surgery, physiotherapy and occupational therapy have been hit particularly hard in all three of the country’s hospitals during the Covid period.

Waiting lists in parts of the psychiatric system have also grown significantly since March.

This summer, the health minister reported that there had been about 6,000 fewer medical appointments and surgeries than in the same period last year.

But this number has now been halved, partly due to heightened hospital activity during the period with no Covid infection and partly because many appointments have been conducted over the phone.
