A new Delta offshoot variant known as AY.3 and B.1.621 has been identified in Denmark and Norway, according to Danish media reports.

The new strain is believed to be a sublineage of the highly infectious Delta strain which has become the dominant Covid strain in many countries.

Norway’s public health board has confirmed a few cases of the B.1.621 strain but none so far of the AY.3 strain.

The new Covid-19 strain was first detected in Colombia in January of this year, and seven cases have so far been identified in Denmark. According to Reuters, the new variant has also been detected in the US and the UK.

Danish professor Mads Albertsen says it is too early to say for certain whether the new strain is more transmissible than the current Delta variant.
