No plans for further Covid restrictions

The government wants to focus its Covid restrictions on the hardest-hit regions rather than reintroducing countrywide measures.

Preventive measures have been implemented in Klaksvík and Eysturoy, and Prime Minister Bárður á Steig Nielsen wants to wait a few days to see whether these local restrictions will be enough to reduce the spread of Covid.

Should the situation worsen, he adds, the government may consider reintroducing border testing.

“Back when we did border testing, very few positive tests were registered on arrival. A vast majority of cases were identified in follow-up tests a few days after arrival,” he says.

“However, if the situation in the countries around us worsens significantly, we may consider going back to testing at the borders.”

The latest figures reveal that only about 30 percent of arrivals follow the recommendation to take a Covid test two days after arrival from abroad.

“We are doing everything we can to inform arrivals about this recommendation, and we are also working on improving the way we register these follow-up tests,” says the Prime Minister.

“Rather than introducing a countrywide lockdown at this time, I would like to ask the Faroese public to be alert and exercise great caution in the coming days and weeks.”
