Dungeons and Dragons can boost self-confidence
Roleplaying games are a great tool for people who lack social skills, says play therapy provider

Anyone who is into gaming knows about Dungeons and Dragons, arguably the world’s most famous roleplaying game.

But it’s more than a game, argues occupational therapist Barbara Krossteig, who runs play therapy company Spælival.

D&D, as the game is commonly known among players, is also a great therapeutic tool for people with mental health problems, especially those with limited interpersonal skills.

“If you have low self-esteem, the game may offer you some experiences that contradict your view of yourself,” says Krossteig.

Spælival aims to improve the personal and social skills of people with so-called neurodivergent conditions such as autism, ADHD, social anxiety and depression.
