Women and men in the Faroes are enjoying a significantly longer life expectancy today than only 30 years ago, according to the Chief Medical Officer’s 2017 health report.

In 1987, the average lifespan of Faroese men was 72.1 years, compared to 80.4 years in 2017. This is an increase of 8.3 years over the past 30 years.

Women had an average life expectancy of 78.8 in 1987, compared to 84.5 in 2017 – an increase of 5.5 years in the 30-year period.

The average life expectancy for both genders in 1987 was 75.5 years, rising to 82.2 years in 2017.

In other words, Faroese people live, on average, almost seven years longer than in 1987.
