After 18 days of industrial action by the midwives at the National Hospital maternity ward, the strike has now been called off.

The finance minister called a meeting with the Midwives’ Union yesterday morning, which ended with a new contract valid from 1 October 2017 to 1 October 2020.

The new contract states that the midwives’ salaries will increase by 0.6 percent in October 2017 (retrospectively), by 1.2 percent in October 2018 (retrospectively) and by 1.8 percent in October 2019.

Changes have also been made to the terminal salary, which will increase over the three-year period.

The total salary increase is estimated at 8.47 percent over three years.

The new contract also includes early retirement pension for midwives who are paid by the hour.
