Digital identity system delayed

Digital identity system delayed
A new digital identity system due for launch later this month has now been postponed until the autumn due to the corona crisis

The new ”Talgildi samleikin” digital identity system, which will be used to log into all Faroese public-sector systems, was scheduled for launch on 29 May.

But due to the corona lockdown, the launch has been postponed to August or September.

The digital identity will be used to log into all public-sector systems, and eventually it will replace the Danish NemID as a personal banking login.

According to finance minister Jørgen Niclasen, some users may need to change twice, first from the old Cryptomatic login system to NemID and then from NemID to the new digital identity.

Bank managers have reported that as the Cryptomatic system is not sufficiently safe for online banking, it will be deactivated on 29 May.

Since the digital identity system will be delayed, Cryptomatic users will need to start using NemID from 29 May.

Although NemID is not yet mandatory in the Faroes, most citizens are currently using it. You can request NemID in your bank.
