Covid expert: bad idea to stop border testing

Mandatory Covid testing at the borders will stop tonight.
This is too early, says professor Pál Weihe, who does not believe that all travellers will respect the new recommendation asking travellers to get tested two days prior to arrival and two days after.
“Most people will probably follow the recommendations, but I have a feeling that those who really ought to get tested are those who will not do it,” he says.

“The existing border testing system has been exceptional, and it has protected us well. By getting rid of it, we are increasing the risk of further spread.”
The professor does not, however, expect this to lead to a new Covid wave.
“We are much better protected now, with about two-thirds of the population vaccinated. But we’re not entirely out of the woods yet,” he says.
“We need up to 90 percent of the population vaccinated to achieve herd immunity, and we may not reach that figure until October.”
