Christmas quarantine for 100+ plane passengers
Covid was detected in passengers on all six flights arriving on Friday

The Faroes are seeing the effects of the rapid increase in Omicron cases in the countries around us.

Out of the 554 plane passengers who were tested on Friday, at least 12 tested Covid positive, and they were spread across all six flights that landed on Friday. It is not yet clear how many of these cases included the Omicron variant.

About 120 passengers were seated near those who tested positive. These people will now be asked to quarantine for the next seven days, regardless of their vaccination status.

High risk of Christmas quarantine for arrivals

“We are seeing that the Omicron variant can bypass the vaccine. We are also seeing many cases of reinfection, and that’s something we have never seen before,” says chief medical officer Lars Fodgaard Møller.

“It is, however, clear that the vaccines provide solid protection against serious illness.”

With rapidly increasing Omicron figures in the countries around us, it is likely that many more people arriving in the Faroes will be spending their Christmas in quarantine as a safety precaution, he adds.
