Lights off for an hour

Streetlights in many towns and villages will be switched off tonight between 8.30pm and 9.30pm.

This is done to mark Earth Hour, a global event run annually by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) to raise awareness of the climate crisis.

Many Faroese towns and villages are organising special Earth Hour walks tonight.

Tórshavn City Council has organised a walk from Argir to the Kongavarði king’s monument where people can watch the city lights go off. The walk starts at the Argjahamri school at 7.30pm. Scouts will be lighting tallow candles along the streets.

Suðuroy

Tvøroyri will also switch of its streetlights tonight, and a walk will start from the Tvøroyrar Bygdar - og sjóvinnusavn at 7.45pm.

If weather permits, residents of Vágur will be walking up the Gjógvaráfjall mountain, starting at the town’s grove at 7.30pm. A special church service will also be held in the town church during Earth Hour.

Other towns and villages across the country are expected to organise similar events.
