Canal planned for Tórshavn city centre

Tórshavn City council yesterday approved a plan to create a short canal outside the Parliament buildings.

The estimated eight-month construction project is scheduled to start in August.

The DKK 12 million project will be financed by the City Council and the government.

Initially, the plan was to de-culvert the old Havnará river, which was covered up in the 1960s.

However, as analyses from last summer revealed that Havnará contains sewer water, the council decided to create a new channel on top of the old river instead.

The first stage of the three-stage project consists of creating a canal running from outside the Betri Banki building down to the southern end of the lawn outside the Parliament building, near the R. C. Effersøe statue. This is a stretch of 50-60 metres.

U-turn on LGBT funding

LGBT’s funding for its annual Faroe Pride parade will increase to DKK 50,000 per year for the next three years.

The City Council had initially planned to reduce the current DKK 20,000 annual grant to DKK 12,500, but the council agreed to increase it to 50,000 at yesterday’s meeting.

The money will be spent on concert arrangements, security measures, etc. for the Faroe Pride parade on 27 July.

Survey on well-being of seniors

Some 2,000 elderly people, their relatives and elderly care staff in Tórshavn municipality will soon be sent a questionnaire seeking to determine the well-being of its senior citizens.

The City Council will use data from the survey as a background for possible improvements in the services to its elderly citizens.
