Growing demand for family substance abuse therapy

When a person suffers from substance abuse problems, the whole household is affected.
So says Alisa Hammer, who manages the Blue Cross ‘Títt rúm’ (‘Your space’) group therapy service for people aged 9-35 whose parents have substance abuse issues.
These therapy sessions have been available for the past ten years.
The previous half-year term saw 45 people attending seven groups, and Hammer expects this number to increase for the upcoming term.

The sessions, which take place in Tórshavn and are free of charge, consist of group talks where children and youths are encouraged to talk openly with their peers about thoughts, emotions and experiences related to alcohol and substance abuse in their families.
'Títt rúm' also offers family consultations with the aim of building a healthier home environment in which the child can learn to cope despite alcohol or drug abuse in the family.
The application deadline for the upcoming term is 7 September. To register, call 770709 or email tittrum@blakross.fo.
